Experimental releases in Italy

In Italy, the Interministerial Evaluation Commission for Biotechnology (CIV) has authorized 291 experimental releases in the environment of genetically modified plants and 16 microorganisms.
In Italy, the first fields of genetically modified (GM) plants appeared in 1992 for the sole purpose of experimentation. The most representative data regard the period from 1999-2004. The following graph shows the total area covered and the number of experimentations carried out each year. It should be noted that a single experimentation can be repeated for various years and several experimentations can correspond to the same authorization request.

The most common features found in experimentations carried out in Italy are pathogen resistance (Re P) and herbicide tolerance (Toll E). The following two graphs report data on the progress of experimentations. Genetic modifications are referred to total experimentations on GM plants in Italy. It is worth noting how experimentation objectives vary during the course of the given period.
