Guidelines for the compilation of illustrative notes
Tectonics
Following the huge advances (progress) made by structural geology
from the 1980s onwards, as far as tectonics are concerned it should
be pointed out that the tectonics model in the explanatory notes of
the previous 1: 100,000 and 1: 50,000 sheets is now completely
inadequate. The explanatory notes of the new sheets must describe
the overall structural arrangement, the geometry and kinematics of
the structures present, with particular regard to the main tectonic
elements and, where possible, the evolution and succession of the
deformative phase. Space should also be given to mesostructural
data, which may take the form of diagrams. The argument may be
dealt with according to geographic sector, by lithological class
– in particular cases and if believed necessary –
distinguishing between brittle and ductile deformation, etc. If it
is decided to proceed by tectonic unit, Authors must ensure that
they correspond to those included in the structural scheme and in
the sheet legend, and that the order in which they are listed
corresponds to the order of tectonic overlapping (as in the
Stratigraphy section). In any case, care must be taken to keep data
separate from interpretations; the latter must be congruous with
the data available and compared with the various models existing in
literature. If geophysical data and surveys are available they
should be included, especially if not published elsewhere. They
could also be in the form of outlines, map excerpts, sections, etc.
Attention should also be paid to aspects relative to neotectonics
and, more in general, to tectonic studies in seismic areas. The
importance of this argument is such that it might warrant
(deserves) a separate chapter.
