Elements of applied geology relative to 1: 50,000 geological
sheets
Premise
The realisation of the 1: 50,000 Geological Map of Italy is
currently based on the 1:10,000 sheet (distinguishing between
outcropping and non-outcropping units), on the drafting of the
1:25,000 cartography and on the relative digitisation of the data
and, finally, on the production and printing of the 1:50,000
sheets.
Given that this is basic geological cartography, during mapping and
the subsequent data processing phase emphasis is given to the
stratigraphic, sedimentological, petrographic, and structural
features forming the backbone of this cartography, using specific
geothematical sheets for an in-depth analysis of given areas (like
geomorphology, hydrogeology, slope stability, etc). Elements of a
more strictly applicative nature. The same elements will also be
collected and represented on the 1: 50,000 sheets. In fact Chapter
5 of the Quaderno, serie III, n. 1 of the National Geological
Service is titled “Guidelines and Implementation Criteria
in mapping elements of technical geology in geological
sheets”, and the “Symbology”
section in the same Quaderno and the series of symbols in Quaderno,
serie III, n. 2 describe how landslides, quarries, mines,
boreholes, springs, etc. are to be represented. Later additions to
the Quaderni also have dealt with elements of technical geology or
related aspects. Moreover, the slow progress of CARG project has
led to both financial and human resources being concentrated on the
basic geological cartography, causing the dozens of geothematic
sheets being drawn up to take on an “experimental”
character. It was also for this reason that it became so pressing
to acquire elements of technical geology since the basic geological
cartography realisation stage.
This document is therefore intended to incentivise – in
compliance with the current regulations (see above) – the
collection of application data, their representation on 1:50,000
scale sheets and their description in the explanatory notes;
reference should be made to Quaderno, serie III, n. 6 and
subsequent amendments and additions with regard to the
database.
