State of the Coasts

Atlas of the coasts

The Atlas is the result of a preliminary study about the effects of meteo-marine forcing on the Italian coast, with particular respect to potential solid transport and coastal erosion caused by wind sea waves. The aim of the Atlas is to provide the results of the statistical analysis over more than 14 years of  available data along all the Italian shoreline, describing in a concise way the methods and the procedures used. Wave climates along all the Italian sectors and a complete list of storm events are the key issues of the report.

Sea state forecasts

The site hosts daily short-term forecasts of the Mediterranean Sea state.
48 hours of significant wave height very high resolution forecasts are available in all the Mediterranean basin, along with water level forecasts in the Adriatic Sea and in the Venice Lagoon. The chain of models which are part of the POSEIDON forecast system is made of the BOLAM meteorological model at 0.1/0.1 grid resolution, the WAve Model for the wind waves, the POM (Princeton Ocean Model) for the water level in the Adriatic Sea, and the Finite Element Model (FEM) for the forecast of ‘acqua alta’ phenomenon at Venice.
