Geological maps
In February 1960, law n. 68 established that the Geological
Survey of Italy (now part of ISPRA) would have also been
responsible for geological and geo-thematic mapping as national
cartographic body. Functions include production and publication of
the geological map of Italy at several scales. The geological map
is an official representation of the geological covering of the
national territory based on data acquired during detailed land
surveys and field checks. Once surveyed and collected, the data
urdergone laboratory analyses and a further elaboration. The
acquired information is then associated to the corresponding
topographic base so that, through the use of conventional symbols,
both stratigraphic position and petrografic characteristics of the
investigated geological formations, are verified and validated in
relation to the genesis and the relationships with the adjacent
rocks. The Geological Sheets are for sale at the "Istituto
Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato" (the official publication body of
the Italian Government), in Rome, and at credited bookshops.
Moreover they can be accessed at the ISPRA Library.
Geological sheets in flash format are available on the web
