The congress is one of the events dedicated to the 'International Year of Planet Earth", promoted by ONU and sponsored by UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences. The centenary of the earthquake that struck Messina and Reggio Calabria becomes an occasion of reflection to preserve the collective historical memory of an event that marked not only the Calabrian and Sicilian society, but also the seismic national legislation scenario.
The Department of Soil Defense - Italian Geological Service of ISPRA, (fornerly APAT) is in the Organizing Committee of the Congress, along with Region Sicily and Region Calabria, the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection of Sicily and Calabria, the Regional Order of Geologists.
