There are more than 400 million inhabitants in the 22 countries bordering the Mediterranean, 143 million live in the coastal strip, which every year receives also 175 million visitors. The Mediterranean environment is one of the richest and most vulnerable in the world, because its marine and coastal areas are exposed to a wide range of pressures, 80% coming from land-based pollution. The European Commission and European Investment Bank presented the results of a study on potential investments to rehabilitate the polluted hotspots in Southern and Eastern Mediterranean. ISPRA
