ISPRA was established by Law no. 133/2008 (conversion of Decree
no. 112/2008, with amendements).
Article 1 provides to change the name of the institute from
IRPA, established by the Decree no. 112/2008, to ISPRA (Istituto
Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale - Higher
Institute for the protection and environmental research. ISPRA
performs, with the inherent financial resources, equipment and
personnel, the duties of:
- the Italian Environment Protection and Technical Services
Agency (article 38 of Legislative Decree no. 300/1999, and
subsequently amended);
- the National Institute for Wildlife (Law no. 157/1992, and
subsequently amended);
- the Central Institute for Scientific and Technological Research
applied to the Sea (Decree no. 496/1993, article
1-bis, converted into Law no. 61, Article 1, January 21, 1994,
with amendments)
The functions of Chairman, Board of Governors and
Executive Director are carried out, until ISPRA start up, by the
Extraordinary Commissioner Vincenzo Grimaldi, supported by
Sub-commissioners Stefano La Porta and Emilio
Santori.
