United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
This is one of the five regional commissions which are part of
ECOSOC (UN Economic and Social Council). As well as encouraging
higher levels of economic cooperation between member states, UNECE
generates agreements, regulations and standards and provides
technical assistance to the Multilateral Regional Conventions, some
of which are specifically related to the environment:
- Geneva Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air
Pollution - LRTAP;
- Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a
Transboundary Context;
- Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial
Accidents;
- Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in
Decision-making procedures and Access to Justice in Environmental
Matters
- Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary
Watercourses and International Lakes.
On request, APAT provides MATT with technical support for
these conventions. APAT also takes part in the Committee of
Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and on
the Globally Harmonized System of Classification
and Labelling (GHS); this committee has the objective of
organising the tasks of the two Sub Committees: One is for
transport (TDG) and one for classification (GHS) and the results
are sent to ECOSOC for final approval and the necessary
authorization required for them to be published. APAT is the
Committee President for 2002-2004, the first meeting was held in
December 2002, the next one will take place in December 2004.
