Environmental Performance Reviews - EPRs
Environmental Performance Reviews analyse and study trends,
policy implementation and performance for each OECD member state.
They contain recommendations aimed at helping the States that are
being analysed to consolidate their results and continue to make
progress. This makes them one of OECD’s core products.
APAT contributed to Italy’s Review. It also contributed
to the Environmental Performance Reviews of Luxembourg, Ireland,
Germany, Iceland, Norway and Portugal.
Annex I Expert Group for the UN Framework Convention on
Climate Change
APAT is part of the Annex I Expert Group for the Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), made up of representatives of
the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Foreign Affairs for the
countries listed in the document as well as those countries which
have given their commitment to the project. Most OECD member States
and many countries with a Transitioning Economy (Countries of
Central and Eastern Europe and of the Commonwealth of Independent
States) are included in Annex I.
APAT also ensures support to MATT in the preparatory meetings
for the UNFCCC’s Conferences of the Parties. As far as the
implementation process for commitments resulting from the
Convention are concerned APAT has taken part in the country review
for the greenhouse effect gases of Hungary, and in the review of
Slovenia’s first National Communication. This role was
designated to APAT by the Convention’s Secretariat.
OECD Research Projects
APAT has taken part in research projects coordinated by OECD.
Some of them are listed below:
- The Environmentally Sustainable Transport project, aimed at
defining a framework of policies for the environmental
sustainability of transport systems;
- Joint project OECD/ECMT (European Conference of Ministers of
Transport) on Urban Travel and Sustainable Development.
Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA)
NEA is an OECD agency specialised in assisting its Member
countries in maintaining and further developing, the scientific,
technological and legal bases required for the safe,
environmentally friendly and economical use of nuclear energy for
peaceful purposes.
APAT supplies technical and scientific contributions in
support of NEA’s research projects, helping in the
preparation of reports, research and event organising such as the
First International Forum on Environment Radiation
Protection which is critical to the study of ionizing radiation
protection.
It takes part in the Director Committee and in some
initiatives promoted by the various Committees which make up NEA,
such as:
- The Forum on Stakeholder Confidence initiative of the
Radioactive Waste Management Committee – RWMC;
- International exercises for cross frontier nuclear emergencies
as provided for by INEX (International Nuclear Emergency
Exercises), coordinated by the Committee on Radiation Protection
and Public Health – CRPPH;
- The RASPLAV project for the study of the behaviour of nuclear
reactors during severe accidents, and the connected follow up MASCA
project;
- Critical Examination and preparation of proposals as per the
new Ionizing Radiation Protection System which is currently being
worked on by the International Commission on Radiological
Protection using two special Expert Groups (EGRP and EGIR).
